Carter’s Surgery

Well Carter had his surgery last Wednesday and we are all alive and well : )  We got to the hospital at 8 am and they took us back right away.  Carter wanted NOTHING to do with the gown or booties, so he hung out in his diaper and crocs.  They had a TV so he watched some cartoons to pass the time.  At about 9:30 they came to take him back.  We did pretty good.  He didn’t cry and neither did I.

Then out to the waiting room we went.  The time went pretty quick, but I will admit I got a little panicky.  Some friends of ours went through this not to long ago and they said it only took about 20 minutes.  After 30 minutes I started to worry.  The Dr. came out after about 45 minutes and said it went great.  His tonsils were a 4+ on a scale of 1 to 4, 4 being the worst. His adenoids were only 10% open when they should have been 100%.  Then his ear tube…it was still clogged so he went in to take it out, but on the inside it had left an adhesion that was acting like saran wrap.  He had to scrap out all the gunk and then suction all the fluid that was built up in there…ewwww!  He put in a new tube in his left ear,  Then it was off to recovery.  Carter woke up screaming mad.  He cried for about 5 minutes, then he fell asleep on my shoulder.  We had to sit in recovery for an hour.  They checked his vitals every 10 minutes.  Then we went up to a room on the pediatric floor.  Apparently the hospital was super crowded because we had to share a room. YUCK!  The part I was most nervous about was keeping Carter happy in a hospital bed for a day, but he did really great.  He slept A LOT.  He fussed a bit when it was time for more medicine, but overall he did pretty great.

We had several visitors come.  Cailynn came up after school and she DID NOT like seeing her brother sick.  She was almost in tears.  One of my good friends had her baby on Wednesday so it was neat just walking up the hall to go see her and that new baby! 

The night was pretty rough.  The little boy sharing a room with us had the same procedure so he cried a lot.  Plus the nurses were in every 4 hours to check vitals and give meds.  By 6 am I was SOOO ready to go home.  The Dr called to check in about 7:30 and by 8:30 we were out the door!!

He looks pitiful huh?  The next few days were tough.  All he wanted was mommy!  I had to work on Friday so my mom kept him and that was hard.  Especially since he woke up COVERED in green puke that morning.  She said he did great all day though.  Our biggest issue has been getting him to eat and drink.  He is not interested in ANYTHING! Not even ice cream and popsicles.  The only thing he will eat is yogurt so he has been living on yogurt for the last several days.  I sure hope this helps Carter man and that we are infection free for a LONG time!!
